情态动词can的用法：主要用来表示能力，可能性，请求或许可。

1.can表示能力

can表示一般能力，指本身具有的能力，体能，智能等，意思是能够，能，会。could表示过去的能力。

I can speak English.我会说英语。

The old man can't use the smart phone.这位老人不会用智能手机。

The boy could speak from one year old.这男孩一岁就会说话了。

重点提示：can 与be able to 的区别

①can和be able to都可以表示能力，但can只有一般现在时和一般过去时（could）两种形式，而be able to有多种时态。

be able to的时态：

一般将来时：will be able to

过去将来时：would be able to

一般现在时：is/am/are able to

一般过去时：was/were able to

现在完成时：have/has been able to

过去完成时：had been able to

The little boy has been able to use chopsticks.这个小男孩已经会用筷子了。

②could和was able to都可以表示过去的能力，二者可以互换，但was able to还可以表示经过一定的努力获得的能力，一般不用could。

He was so strong that he could/was able to lift the stone.他很强壮，能举起那块石头。

The fire was very big, but he was able toescape from it.火很大，但他还是设法逃了出来。（一般不用could）

2.can表示推测

can表示推测常用于疑问句或否定句，用于肯定句时表示抽象或理论上的可能性，意思是有时可能。

He can't be at home now. I just saw him on the street.他现在不可能在家。我刚在街上看到他。

He can't have gone to Shanghai, for I saw him just now.他不可能去上海了，因为我刚才看见他了。

Can Mary steal the money?玛丽可能偷到钱吗?

Anyone can make mistakes, so don't be afraid.任何人都可能犯错误，所以不要害怕。

It can be hot in summer in Harbin.哈尔滨的夏天有时可能会很热。

3.can表示请求或许可

can可以代替may表示许可，can't表示不许可，用于疑问句中表示请求。

You can use my computer today.你今天可以用我的电脑。

We can't smoke in the meeting room.我们在会议室不可以抽烟。

Could you please hand me the pen?你能把钢笔递给我吗?

Can I go home now?我现在可以回家了吗?

4.can表示惊讶

can表示惊讶一般用于疑问句中，语气较强。

How can you believe him!你怎么能相信他!

Can the news be true?这消息可能是真的吗?

5.can构成的常用短语

①can't help but do sth , can't help (doing) sth表示不得不，不禁，禁不住

Hearing the news, he can't help shaking.听到这个消息，他禁不住发抖。

I can't help but think of my mother.我不禁想起了我的母亲。

You can't help but accept him. 你没别的法子，只能接受。

②can but do sth只好，只能

We can but hope. 我们只能希望如此。

We can but wait until he comes back.我们只能等他回来。
