一、earth 名词。意思是“地球、世界”。侧重指天文学上的“球体”。例如：

The earth travels round the sun. 地球绕着太阳转。

I must be the happiest person on earth. 我一定是世界上最幸福的人。（earth前不加定冠词the）

The doctor knows very well the history of life on earth.那位博士对地球上的生命史了解甚多。

二、world 名词。意思是“地球、世界、地球人”。侧重指地球上的“社会、世界”。例如：

I have travelled round the world. 我已经游遍了全世界。

We had two world wars in last century. 上个世纪发生了两次世界大战。

French is spoken in many ports of the world.世界上许多地方都讲法语。

The whole world was waiting for news of the astronauts. 全世界的人都在等待宇航员们的消息。
